Mosquitos thrive during the summer months, and it always seems like they’re worse after it rains. But why? This is a common question we get here at Wagner Pest Solutions. Homeowners often call us after storms, annoyed that their lawns seem to be taken over by these blood-thirsty insects, and they beg us for a solution. Thankfully, we’ve got just what you need to get rid of these pests. Additionally, here is why these pests are so bad after it rains.
Mosquito eggs require standing pools of water to hatch and grow. This often includes puddles in your lawn, as well as ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water. After heavy rain, adult female mosquitos will take advantage of these bodies of water and lay their eggs. Even a small bottle cap of water can hold up to 300 mosquito eggs. Larvae will emerge within 24 to 48 hours after being laid and grow into adults within two to three days. Because of their quick life cycle, it can seem like mosquitos pop up almost overnight.
In addition to loving rain and standing water, mosquitos also need heat and humidity. These creatures are cold-blooded, which means they can’t regulate their body temperatures and therefore rely on external factors to live. These pesky biters rely heavily on moisture and plenty of heat or humidity to survive, thriving in areas where the weather is a consistent 80°F. However, it can also get too hot for mosquitos. If humidity drops and temperatures rise, mosquitos are not as active. But, once the temperatures drop again, especially after it rains, mosquitos become more active and begin looking for their next meal.
The simple answer is yes. Mosquito prevention is easy, and it starts with eliminating the areas they may use for breeding and egg-laying. This means you should be cleaning your gutters regularly, changing the water in your birdbaths, and emptying the water from any other outdoor contains. If it’s recently rained in your area, make sure you act quickly to eliminate any of these unnecessary standing water areas around your home. You should also treat ponds and pools to prevent already-laid eggs from hatching and to deter adults from returning to lay more eggs.
